Conical Burr Grinders Are The Best Coffee Grinders

Arguable the best way to make the prefect cup of coffee is to invest in a coffee grinder. You would think the selection would be easy, but like most things there are certain types of coffee grinders; the best of which are the conical burr grinders. This is because they preserve the aroma of the coffee bean, but also because they are unlikely to destroy the flavour that lesser coffee grinders ultimately do.

The reason coffee generally tastes better when produced from conical burr grinders is due in part to the conical burr being able to grind coffee beans at much slower speeds.  The theory behind this is the faster the coffee bean is grinded, the more friction is produced, this in turn results in a greater amount of heat being emitted that can comprise the perfect cup of coffee.

A typical conical burr coffee grinder allows you to match the coarseness of the grind to your desired brewing method.  So whether you like your coffee coarse, regular, fine or even extra fine you’ll find a conical burr grinder capable of producing coffee to your precise requirements.

Similar to a regular burr, the conical burr coffee grinder works in a comparable manner, but as the name suggests, involves a cone shaped burr at the base of the grinder that rotates against a top burr.  As conical burr grinders have a greater surface area they do not need to rotate as fast as a conversional coffee grinder does to produce the required amount of coffee grinds.

Conical burr grinders also work better with varying types of coffee beans and therefore are not a limiting factor when selecting specific types of brews to  produce.  This also means that if you like highly flavored or oily coffees then a conical burr grinder is unlikely to clog.

However, when deciding on a grinder it’s important to consider other aspects and not just the coffee, although admittedly this can be difficult.

For instance, we highly recommend you select a model that has removable upper burrs and a designated cleaning brush so that the grinding chamber can easily and properly be cleaned.  It’s amazing how many manufactures neglect this essential requirement.

Also, if you have young children we highly recommend that for safety reasons, you choose a coffee grinder that does not operate until the coffee beans have been locked into the grinding chamber and that the coffee grinder is securely closed.

Lastly then it’s a question of noise.  Typically conical burr grinders are quieter than other varieties, but that said, we’d recommend you choose one with a low decibel rating, especially if you intend to make a lot of coffee.

If you are serious about making coffee then a conical burr coffee grinder is essential.  To make things easy for you, we’ve provided plenty of resources and reviews of what we feel are the best conical burr grinders you can buy, especially if you love coffee just like we do.
